Judiciary Announces Death Sentence for CIA Agent

TEHRAN (Dispatches) – An Iranian national has been sentenced to death for spying for the CIA and Mossad on the whereabouts of Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated by the U.S. in Baghdad early this year, Iran’s Judiciary spokesman Gholam Hussein Esmaeili said.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Esmaeili said the convict, named Seyed Mahmoud Mousavi Majd, had connections with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Zionist espionage service Mossad.
In exchange for receiving dollars, the spy gathered intelligence for the CIA and Mossad on the Iranian security sphere and Armed Forces, including on the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Forces and on the whereabouts of Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, the spokesman said.
The Revolution’s Court has sentenced the spy to death, and the ruling has been upheld by another court, he said, adding that the convict will soon be executed.
Yet, a later Judiciary statement reminded that Majd had played no role in the U.S. terror attack on Martyred General Soleimani, implying that his spying pertained to the time before Gen. Soleimani’s martyrdom.
Lt. General Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha’abi (PMU), and a number of their entourage were martyred in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport on January 3.
Esmaeili also referred to the U.S. navy veteran Michael Whitem and added that he was freed and sent home “on humanitarian grounds” while taking the country’s “general interests” into consideration, emphasizing that any decision-making about releasing prisoners lies with Iran’s Judiciary.
“Releasing this U.S. national, who was imprisoned in the Islamic Republic of Iran, was a humanitarian measure taken within the framework of judicial regulations, while taking into consideration the country’s general interests, and with the intervention of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC),” he said.
White was freed last Thursday as part of a prisoner swap in which the United States released Majid Taheri, an Iranian scientist who had been imprisoned in the U.S. on false charges, after spending over a year in jail.
And also the spokesman added that six persons have been arrested in connection to the downing of Ukrainian plane, in which 176 people were killed.
“Six have been so far arrested in relation to the ongoing investigations; three of them were released on bail, while the other three are still being held,” Esmaili said.
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 (PS752) was a scheduled international passenger flight from Tehran to Kiev operated by Ukraine International Airlines (UIA). On 8 January 2020, the Boeing 737-800 operating the route was shot down shortly after take-off from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport. All the 176 passengers and crew were killed.
