Iranian Delegation Leaves Dubai Summit Due to Israeli Attendance

Tehran’s delegation to the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) left the venue of the international event in the United Arab Emirates in protest at the presence of Israel’s representative and the regime’s onslaught against the Gaza Strip, and later released the statement Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian was set to deliver at the summit.

The Iranian delegation, headed by Mehrabian, declined to attend the UN’s COP28 climate summit in Dubai on Friday due to the presence of the head of the Zionist regime.

Iran’s state media officially announced on Thursday that President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi would not attend the summit due to the invitation of the Israeli officials by the UAE.

Earlier Thursday, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian expressed Iran’s thanks for the UAE president’s invitation in a telephone conversation with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during which he explained Tehran’s reservations about the presence of Israeli officials.

The commencement of the international summit coincided with the Israeli resumption of its aggression against the Gaza Strip after a weeklong truce expired earlier on Friday leaving dozens of Palestinians dead or injured.

Mehrabian has released the statement he was set to deliver at the summit.

The full text of the Iranian minister’s speech is as follows:

In the Name of God

xcellencies;
Honorable leaders and representatives;
Ladies and gentlemen;

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the host of the meeting of the Conference of Members of the Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP 28, which is rightly called the “Solidarity and Action”. We, the member states of the United Nations, have gathered in this meeting to reduce environmental pollution on the planet for a better life for human and all the livings and reduce human suffering. But how can this goal be achieved when more than 14,000 dear people of GAZA, including thousands of women, children and helpless newborns, have been killed by the usurping Zionist regime and thousands injured and disabled without any medical care in the worst condition. It is even more unfortunate that many of them have lost their lives in the attacks of this fake regime on hospitals and medical centers. The adoption of political, economic and other appropriate measures by all countries to stop and condemn the genocide and the killing of innocent people in Gaza and the immediate trial of criminals is the “shared
responsibility” of all members present in this convention.
It is apparent all the sponsors especially America shares the regime crimes.

Excellencies;

“Climate change” as one of the major crises in today’s world has caused an increase in extreme climate events in the world, especially in the Middle East, and as a result, food and water security, health and life of the human race have been seriously endangered. The emergence of concepts such as “common but different responsibility” in the world literature and its establishment as a “common commitment to the global community” is an important and progressive step, and its serious pursuit is emphasized until the result is achieved.

The key to success in the joint effort to reduce climate change, promote adaptation and increase resilience, is to take compensatory measures by developed countries according to their historical responsibility and promises, and to adopt an approach based on the principles of “justice”, “flexibility” and “Common but different responsibility” for developing countries through financial, technical and technological support.
It is not possible to impose climate change damages on developing countries and thus stop or slow down their development process as an inalienable right. Still, for a significant part of the developing world, the fight against poverty and the development of health and the supply of housing and energy are considered essential priorities. In this regard, the lack of implementation tools for climate measures, including financial resources and technology transfer, is the biggest challenge for these countries. In this regard, compensation for damages and losses by developed countries should be emphasized.

It should be noted that a fair transition towards a future with climate resilience requires attention to the different capacities, capabilities, conditions and priorities of nations. Each country’s path is special and unique, and in order to set quantitative goals in this field, countries must act voluntarily based on their national laws and regulations.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Iran as a member of more than 15 multilateral environmental conventions and protocols, is one of the active countries in the region, in spite of some countries limiting targeted measures namely sanctions Iran did multiple actions against climate change threats. Playing an active role in the synergy of countries in order to deal with dust in the region by holding the Tehran conference this year is one of the actions of my country.

Also, we are looking for measures such as reducing the amount of flare in the country’s oil and gas industry, multiple development of renewable energies, electrification with public transportation priority, smartening and improving the efficiency of power plants in our country. Promulgation of mandatory standards in the industry, construction and transportation sectors, especially in the household consumption management sector, is another part of the Iranian government’s actions in the field of serious reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which is currently being vigorously implemented.

In the end, I would like to point out that the common environment is the connecting point and valuable heritage of all of us. We hope that international forums will be free from political and non-technical issues by standing together and providing and exchanging knowledge and technology capacities without discrimination. and common financial resources, to be able to present a healthy and clean future to the future generations and the same time condemn and fight against the cruelty and crimes and genocide as well as usurping which are the manifestation of Zionist regime.

I wish success and well-being for the world community.
