Iran Urges Negotiated Solution to Turkey-Syria Rift

 Calling for joint efforts to ensure stability and calm in the region, the foreign minister of Iran reiterated the need for Turkey and Syria to settle their problems politically.

In a meeting in Ankara on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the relations between the two countries as well as the key regional and international developments.

Amirabdollahian described Iran-Turkey ties in different areas as important. He also referred to the exchange of high-ranking delegations between the two neighbors, stressing the need to promote cooperation within the framework of the joint commission and the high council of relations.

The Iranian foreign minister also urged efforts to promote cooperation in the fields pertaining to water resources and Iran’s water right in the Aras River. He added that Tehran and Ankara need to continue exchanging views in relevant sectors such as environment and provincial cooperation as well as the creation of border markets.

The two senior diplomats further discussed major regional developments, including in the Caucasus and Syria.

Reaffirming Iran’s principled policy to support the restoration of peace and stability in the region and between the neighboring countries, Amirabdollahian said the disputes between Turkey and Syria can only be resolved through political means.

For his part, Cavusoglu described the ties between his country and Iran as positive and noted that their cooperation must be enhanced given the determination of the high-ranking officials of Iran and Turkey, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Cavusoglu noted that the exchange of delegations at high levels between Tehran and Ankara paves the way for closer cooperation. He also outlined Turkey’s views about the regional developments in the Caucasus and Syria as well as the Tehran-Ankara cooperation in this regard.
