President Ebrahim Raisi said here Wednesday that as a powerful neighbor of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Islamic Republic of Iran is fully prepared to help resolve the differences and problems between the two Caucasian countries.
The president told representative of the president of Azerbaijan on special assignments Khalaf Khalafov here that relations between Tehran and Baku are based on cultural commonalities and historical and deep religious beliefs.
He said the two Muslim neighbors have diverse and numerous capacities, the exchange of which would secure their interests.
The president said it is necessary to improve relations between Tehran and Baku and to deal with plans designed to create differences and disruptions in the relations between the two countries.
President Raisi said maintaining and promoting stability in the region depends on the cooperation and synergy of the countries of the region.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a powerful neighbor of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, is fully prepared to help resolve the differences and problems of the two countries,” he said.
The president stressed the importance of preserving the borders and geopolitical status of the region, saying Iran welcomes regional dialogues within the G3+3 format or in any other form that can help solve problems in relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The countries of the region have the capacity to solve the problems of the region, Raisi said, cautioning that the entry of foreign countries to the region under any pretext is not in the interest of any of the regional countries.
Khalafov appreciated Iran’s position and the effective role of the president in maintaining relations between the two countries. He said Azerbaijan and Iran have great capacities to strengthen and deepen bilateral and regional relations.
He called the Islamic Republic a powerful country in the region and a neighbor and friend of his country. Azerbaijan, he said, deeply believes that regional issues should be resolved through cooperation and dialogue among the countries of the region and that other countries should not be given a foothold in the region.
Khalafov said Azerbaijan welcomes any dialogue, especially within the G3+3 format to strengthen regional cooperation and resolve regional issues.
The president’s chief of staff Muhammad Jamshidi said Raisi in his meeting with Khalafov said, “The Zangezur corridor will become the basis for the presence of NATO forces in the South Caucasus, which poses a threat to the national security of the countries in the region. The Islamic Republic resolutely opposes this.”
President Raisi separately met with visiting secretary of the security council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan.
The president underlined the need to respect the territorial integrity of the countries of the region, stressing that any geopolitical changes in the Caucasus is unacceptable and harmful to the interests of the regional countries.
The president also stressed the need to protect the rights and security of the Armenians of the Karabakh region, saying the Islamic Republic is ready to cooperate on establishing and maintaining peace, stability and security in the Caucasus region.
