Saudi Arabia: Morteza Qarirs is likely to be released within the next few months

The Riyadh Special Criminal Court, in its hearing session held on December 9th, postponed the final verdict of “Morteza Qarirs”, the youngest political prisoner, to December 23, 2019.
Human rights sources say Morteza Qarirs’s verdict announcement session that was set to be finalized, postponed to December 23. Saudi authorities’ decision to confirm and clarify the final sentence of this prisoner is happening while Qarirs has spent more than 7 years behind bars for the crime of participating in the funeral of his Martyred brother, Ali Qarirs.
Ali Qariras was assassinated by military elements affiliated with the Saudi regime while attending peaceful demonstrations during the February 2011 uprising.
According to these sources, the final verdict is expected to be issued on December 23. The delay came after that at the previous court session which was held in the absence of Qarirs, a verdict was issued against him that led to his imprisonment for 12 years.
But Saudi authorities change their decision after facing with international and human rights pressure and their request from public prosecutor’s office to protest against this verdict.
According to a Riyadh court sentence, Morteza is likely to be released within the next few months.
Earlier, Saudi authorities had transferred Morteza Qarirs from the children’s jail to the infamous and black marked “Al-Mabahes” prison in Dammam, that the action received widespread condemnation of human rights, especially as according to the authorities’ promise, it was planned to be released by the arrival of past Ramadan.
But not only this did not happen, rather they intensified the torture on the youngest political prisoner and transferred him to the “Al-Mabahes” prison, which is set for people over eighteen. The transfer took place while Morteza had spent about thirty-two months in Dar al-Mulahizeh Prison without any charges or trial.
The teenager was arrested on September 20, 2014 without any crime. This happened when Qarirs was only thirteen years old and he was walking along with his family on King Fahd’s bridge between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain when he was arrested.
According to legal reports, Morteza has been interrogated several times without the presence of his lawyer or his legal guardian, and accused for the participation in peaceful demonstrations and participation in the funerals of protesting martyrs. In addition, he was held in solitary prison for a month and tortured and mistreated for forcing him to confess to the charges.
Morteza was deprived from legal lawyer during his imprisonment and forced to accept the fabricated confessions of Saudi authorities.
