Russian Flotilla Docks at Iranian Port for Sea Cup Contest

A flotilla of the Russian Navy arrived in Iran’s Caspian port of Bandar Anzali on Thursday to take part in the sixth edition of the Sea Cup competition, part of the 2021 International Army Games.

The Russian vessels were the third group of foreign forces to enter the Iranian northern waters to participate in the naval competition after flotillas from the Republic of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan berthed in the port.

The Russian flotilla comprises two warships, including Makhachkala artillery ship, with a total of 106 naval forces on board.

Makhachkala sailors are expected to fire from artillery mounts at a floating mine, a target shield and an air target dropped by parachute, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

They will also compete in the use of weapons, the fight for the survivability of the ship as well as search and rescue operations, and conduct exercises such as moving the vessel to the anchorage area, anchoring, sailing in specified routes at maximum speed and providing emergency assistance to ships.

On Wednesday morning, a total of 66 members of Azerbaijani navy marine corps on G-122 and G-124 patrol ships arrived at Bandar Anzali and were received by the 4th Region or the Northern Fleet of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy.

On August 9, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Colonel General Zakir Hasanov visited his country’s naval forces to inspect the readiness of the team participating in the Sea Cup contest.

Two Kazakh vessels also entered Iranian waters on Monday morning as the first vessels to participate in the competition.

The Sea Cup competition, which is a maritime training mission among the crews of surface ships, is scheduled to kick off on August 25 at the naval base of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Caspian Sea, and will wrap up on September 4.

Iran’s Sina-class fast attack missile boats Joshan (Armor) and Paykan (Arrow) will represent the Islamic Republic’s Navy in the contest.
