Navy Tests New Generation of Cruise Missiles

Iran to Build Hypersonic Missiles Soon
TEHRAN (Dispatches) — The commander of the Iranian Navy Admiral Hussein Khanzadi said on Friday Iran is close to obtaining hypersonic missiles, and that the production of these weapons is on the agenda.
“The engines of the naval forces of the army missiles will undergo inevitable changes and should withstand more heat for a long time,” Khanzadi said.
“We will definitely have changes for the refueling systems and the marine navigation system in the marine force.”
He continued: “We have succeeded in achieving missile production with a range of 300 km, and we will soon reach more exciting ranges, and the manufacture of new generation missiles is part of the army’s naval power program.”
Khanzadi said, “The Navy will soon obtain a generation of hypersonic missiles, in which new jet engines are used to move at supersonic speeds several times.”
“The Iranian naval forces are looking forward to launching the missiles vertically, which will enable them to place more missiles on the deck of ships to hit more diversified targets,” he added.
Should Iran obtain hypersonic missiles, they will be one of the handful of nations in the world that possess these weapons.
On Thursday Iran’s Navy successfully test-fired a “new generation” of cruise missiles during military exercises in the northern Indian Ocean and near the entrance to the Persian Gulf.
They were “missiles with deadly precision and power for Iran’s enemies,” said an IRIB reporter at a beach where they were fired from a truck.
The test-firing comes as the United States is seeking an extension of a UN-imposed arms embargo against Iran, which is due to expire in October under Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Washington withdrew from that pact.
“During the exercises, short-range and long-range coast-to-sea and sea-to-sea missiles were successfully fired from the coast and from decks of ships, hitting their targets with great precision,” the Tasnim news agency reported.
The new generation cruise missiles, with a range of 280 km (175 miles) were tested during exercises by the Iranian navy in the Gulf of Oman, which lies next to the Strait of Hormuz waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, and the northern Indian Ocean, Tasnim said.
Deputy Chief of Army for Coordination Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the launch of new cruise missiles is a promising step toward further upgrading of Iran’s defense and deterrence power.
Iran, he said, will continue to march toward self-sufficiency despite brutal sanctions imposed on the country. “The successful test-firing of long-range missiles is a sign of remarkable progress in boosting synergy between the armed forces and defense industries,” he said.
Khanzadi said the production of new missiles by Iranian experts will allow the Islamic Republic to handle any threat against the Islamic establishment and the Iranian people and strengthen the sense of self-reliance in the armed forces.
In April, Iran said it had increased the range of its naval missiles to 700 km.
