Iran Urges US to Learn from Failure in Tabas Operation 43 Years Ago

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs marked the 43rd anniversary of the failed US attack on the Tabas Desert, with a statement calling it an “aggressive action and violation of international regulations.”

The statement urged the US government to “reflect on and learn from the results of this action and more than four decades of hostile approaches and actions against the resistant and proud nation of Iran.”

“The day of April 25, 1980, reminds the US forces of their violation of the territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran and their illegal entry to Tabas in the eastern Iranian province of South Khorasan,” the statement said, adding that fortunately, “the aggressive measure taught the US a bitter lesson as its forces faced a salutary failure during their 1980 operation in Iran’s Tabas.”

Iran also emphasized its commitment to deepening friendly relations and cooperation with other nations while neutralizing American threats and sanctions, it added.

The statement concluded by affirming Iran’s dedication to preserving national independence and achieving all-round progress.

In April 1980, the US forces entered Tabas in South Khorasan Province to free American hostages but were taken off-guard at night by dust and sandstorm. The incident had significant political ramifications and strained relations between Iran and the United States.
