Iran Ranks 14th in Power Plant Capacity in World

TEHRAN (Dispatches) – Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said that the Iran ranks fourteenth in the power plant capacity despite the unilateral sanctions imposed on Tehran by Washington.
“Although the population of our country has increased by about two-thirds over the last four decades, thanks to the efforts of the authorities, the access of citizens to electricity are higher than the global average, and over the past four decades, however, despite the country’s population being only 36 million, many people did not have access to electricity,” Ardakanian said, during the parliament’s open session on Wednesday while reiterating that Iran ranks 14th in terms of power plant capacity in the world.
“Iran’s access to electricity is about 100 percent, while this figure is estimated 96 percent for other countries. Since the year 1392, about 16,000 MW has been added to the country’s electricity capacity, and we hope that this figure will reach 20,000 MW and more by the end of the 12th government,” the Iranian energy minister added.
According to Ardakanian, the country’s foreign exchange needs are $1,200 million in a year, half of which is offset by electricity exports to neighbors, which Iraq is one of them
