Ex-US Prisoner Baqer Namazi Leaves Iran

Baqer Namazi, an 85-year-old Iranian-American who was jailed in Iran for spying, left Iran after being released from jail on humanitarian grounds.

Namazi, a dual national who had been arrested by Iran on espionage charge, left Iran for Oman on Wednesday. He was recently released on the humanitarian ground.

Iranian state media on Wednesday published a video and several photos showing Namazi struggling to board a private plane to leave Iran for Oman.

A lawyer representing the Namazi family said that Baqer is flying to Muscat, and after a short layover, he will be leaving Oman and heading to Abu Dhabi.

“While in the United Arab Emirates, Namazi will undergo surgery to clear possible arterial blockages that could lead to a stroke,” lawyer Jared Genser added.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi has thanked Tehran for the humanitarian measure, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Namazi was been sentenced to 10 years of jail for spying and cooperating with the US government against Tehran and his son, Siamak, 51, also a dual citizen, also remains imprisoned too for spying and collaboration with the US government against Iran.

Some Iranians are in US jails just because of ignoring Washington’s illegal sanctions on Tehran.

Tehran has numerously urged Washington to free Iranian nationals who have been taken hostage for baseless reasons under the pretext that they have bypassed and violated the US sanctions. Iran blasted the US for linking a humanitarian exchange of prisoners with the talks over the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, and called on the White House to act instead of performing theatrical shows.
