Tehran Warns EU of Retaliation over Potential Sanctions

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned of Tehran’s reciprocal response to any fresh sanction against his country in the next summit of the Council of Ministers of the European Union (EU).

Amir Abdollahian on Friday held a telephone conversation with his Portuguese counterpart Joao Gomes Cravinho about the unrest in Iran and foreign interference in the country’s domestic affairs.

The Iranian foreign minister said that Iran is a country “that faces terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda, Jaish Al-Adl and Daesh in the East and the West. Meanwhile, we have witnessed the entry of weapons from the Western and Eastern borders of the country in recent weeks.”

“This is while some countries in their interventionist statements consider riots and terrorist activities as protests and in practice provoke rioters and terrorists and have even put issuing resolutions or imposing sanctions (on Iran) on the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the European Union Council of Ministers and in case they take such a measure, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take countermeasures,” the top diplomat added.

The foreign minister of Portugal, for his part, expressed sympathy with the families of all victims of the recent incidents in Iran, including the law enforcement and security forces.

In a phone call with his Italian foreign minister Luigi Di Maio in early October, Amir Abdollahian slammed meddlesome stances by certain European officials regarding recent developments in Iran, and vowed effective response to any hasty and ill-conceived action against Tehran.

“If the European Union seeks to adopt a hasty and ill-considered measure through a double standard behavior, it should await the Islamic Republic of Iran’s effective and reciprocal action,” Iran’s diplomat stressed.

Protests erupted in several cities across Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who fainted at a police station in mid-September and days later was pronounced dead at a hospital. The demonstrations soon turned violent. A special committee has been established to investigate different aspects of her tragic death.

Iranian officials blame Western countries for orchestrating the riots to destabilize the country.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei severely censured the deadly riots, saying they were orchestrated in advance by the United States and the Israeli regime.

“I state it clearly that these developments were planned by America, the Zionist regime and their acolytes. Their main problem is with a strong and independent Iran and the country’s progress. The Iranian nation proved to be fairly strong during recent events and will bravely come onto the scene wherever necessary in the future,” he added.

In recent days, Iranian officials have blamed the United States, the European Unions (EU), and several Western states for meddling in Iran’s internal affairs over the death of Mahsa. They advised the US and its allies against “opportunism and instrumentalization of the issue of human rights” by misusing the incident.

Tehran reminded that the countries, which, themselves, towed a “long history of warmongering and violence” throughout the world, lacked the legitimacy that could authorize them to “moralize others” concerning the human rights.
