The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected the “impermissible” comments about Iran’s nuclear program in the most recent statement issued by the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC).
In a statement released on Monday, Nasser Kanaani reacted to the statement issued at the conclusion of the 156th session of the PGCC ministerial council in Riyadh, which has called on Iran to restrict the rate of uranium enrichment and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The spokesman said the PGCC statement’s comments about Iran’s nuclear program are impermissible, adding, “The Islamic Republic of Iran pursues its peaceful nuclear program in interaction with the relevant countries and in cooperation with the (International Atomic Energy) Agency according to its rights and commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.”
Reaffirming that Iran’s regional strategy and basic policy entail plans to strengthen and deepen relations with the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council members and promote the neighborliness principle, Kanaani expressed hope that the regional countries would establish modern frameworks for regional cooperation with a view on future and without the previous traditional language.
The developments of the past recent months in the region are promising and serve the interests of all regional states, the Iranian spokesman said, noting, “This region’s countries have collective responsibility for the advancement of the region’s interests, while Iran has always supported dialogue and cooperation among the Persian Gulf countries as regional partners.”
He also reiterated that the three Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb, and the Lesser Tunb will remain as indispensable part of Iran’s territory forever.
Kanaani finally stated that Iran is seriously determined to fulfill the goal of creating a stable, safe and prosperous region in cooperation with its neighbors and brothers in the PGCC.
