Ayatollah Khamenei’s Fatwa on Fasting in Ramadan amid pandemic

Fasting of Ramadan during the outbreak of Corona disease in accordance with the fatwa of Grand Ayatollah Khamenei

Ayatollah Khamenei’s Office of Referendums published the ruling on fasting Ramadan during the outbreak of corona, according to his fatwa.
The text of the question and answer is as follows.* Question: What is the ruling on fasting during Ramadan in the current situation in which coronary heart disease has spread?
* Answer: Fasting as a divine duty is in fact God’s special blessing on the servants and is one of the foundations of human evolution and spiritual upliftment and has been obligatory on the previous nations.
Among the effects of fasting is the emergence of spirituality and inner purity, individual and social piety, strengthening the will and spirit of resistance to hardships, and its role in the health of the human body is clear, and God has set a great reward for fasting people.
Fasting is one of the necessities of the religion and the pillars of Islamic law, and it is not permissible to abstain from fasting during the holy month of Ramadan unless one finds a rational suspicion that fasting causes:
– The onset of the disease
– or the exacerbation of the disease
– or an increase in the duration of the disease and a delay in health.
In these cases, fasting is void, but it is necessary to make up for it.
Obviously, this is sufficient if this assurance is obtained from a specialist physician.
Therefore, if a person has fears and worries about the mentioned matters and this fear has a rational origin, fasting is abrogated, but it is necessary to make up for it.
