Abdullah al-Awdah: My father faces death for demanding reforms in Saudi Arabia

The son of prominent Saudi preacher and scholar Salman al-Awdah in an open letter has warned about possible death penalty against his father who has not doing anything but calling for an end to Saudi Arabia’s siege of Qatar.

Abdullah al-Awdah has written that in September 2017, his father who is a renowned reformist Muslim scholar posted a note on social media website Twitter, calling for an end to Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic standoff with the neighboring Arab country, Qatar.According to Abdullah, security forces arrested Salman al-Awdah just hours after his tweet and he has been in prison ever since. He adds that the Sunni preacher has been held in solitary confinement since his arrest, mistreated, handcuffed, blindfolded and even chained inside his prison cell.

In addition to Sheikh Salman al-Awdah, 17 members of his family have been punished by being banned from leaving the kingdom and his brother was detained for tweeting about Sheikh al-Awdah’s situation. The sheikh stood before the notorious Specialized Criminal Court in July 2018, which according to Abdullah has become a tool to hammer out any dissent or activism within the Arab country by labeling opposition forces and activists as terrorists. Abdullah al-Awdah has noted that his father has now faces charges ranging from spreading corruption by calling for a constitutional monarchy -instead of an absolute monarchy-, stirring public discord to incitement and mocking the government.

Salman al-Awdah could be among 24 prisoners who are at risk of imminent execution in Saudi Arabia

Abdullah al-Awdah (al-Oudah) warned that although his father has not pleaded guilty he still faces death penalty on these trumped-up, politically motivated charges brought against him by the SCC and he could be among the at least 24 prisoners who are at risk of imminent execution this year in Saudi Arabia.

Abdullah al-Awdah (al-Oudah) who himself is a legal scholar accused Saudi Arabian authorities of quelling the dissidents and silencing political opposition and human rights defenders and asked the world not to allow the kingdom to go ahead with its repression.
